The PGA Tour had several golfers withdraw from the Byron Nelson just before the tournament began at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Now, another golfer is withdrawing following the first round.
On the eve of the Byron Nelson’s opening round, Gary Woodland and Will Zalatoris both withdrew the PGA Tour revealed. Woodland is dealing with a concerning back injury and his return timeline remains unclear.
“Gary Woodland’s working through a sore back the last two weeks,” ESPN’s Garrett Johnson detailed in a Wednesday message on X. “WD from @cjbyronnelson today. His caddie Brennan Little tells me Gary hasn’t hit a ball in 10 days.
“Little says he is uncertain on whether Gary will be healthy enough to caddie for his looper at the Senior PGA in 3 weeks.”
In addition to Woodland and Zalatoris, the PGA Tour announced English golfer Matt Wallace has withdrawn from the Byron Nelson with a neck injury. Wallace shot a 72 in the opening round of the tournament but will not complete the Byron Nelson.
The golfer has earned more than $7 million over his career, which includes 10 top-10 finishes and six top-five achievements. Wallace has played in 127 events over his career.
Despite the multiple late withdraws, there is still plenty of talent in the field. No star has shined brighter this week than Scottie Scheffler. The golfer shot a 61 in the first round giving Scheffler a two-stroke lead on the field heading into the second round.

Unfortunately, weather will be a factor this week with lightning halting play during the second round. Scheffler is enjoying being in his nearby home of Dallas, Texas, for the Byron Nelson.

“It’s a ton of fun for us to be able to play in front of the fans here at home. Jordan [Spieth] and I love playing here this week,” Scheffler noted, per CBS Sports’ Patrick McDonald. “This tournament has meant a lot to us over the years, and so it’s really good to be here this week playing again.
“Obviously last year I was missing for some pretty good reasons. I wasn’t too sad about what was going on in my life at the time. I obviously missed being here, and [I’m] excited to be back.”
