How a friendly 49ers competition produced training camp’s most pleasant surprise so far (paywall)
“Jack and I have had a lot of conversations,” Green said. “He’s a real savvy football player, and Jack has real good ball skills. He has a very aggressive playing style when it comes to playing the ball, and I try and pick that up.
“You should try to learn from who you can because we’re all in this together, basically.”

…”He’s a great corner,” Jones said of Green. “I think he has the potential to be one of the true lockdown corners in the league, you know what I’m saying? As far as from me to him, I’ve just been trying to really tell him to go get that ball. Focus on the ball and not just PBUs.
“That’s what I am preaching. … We’re all making each other better. A guy makes a play, and that gives you an energy boost.”
Raheem Morris has been a big part of that, and Green is really enjoying his third defensive coordinator in three years. You get the sense that the 2024 second-round pick is not just saying that because it’s what people want to hear.
“It’s easier to play faster, and I feel like he’s more detailed with just, like, realistic things, and there’s a lot less thinking,” Green said. “I’ve been able to get attached to guys and contest catches, make plays. That’s what he wants, and that fits us.”

…”People don’t just wake up with that ability to go get the ball,” Jones said. “It comes with film study, it comes with practice and repetition. Sometimes you got to take a million reps just to get it right one time.
“I played receiver too growing up. But I didn’t want to get thrown the ball. I wanted to go take it.”
Source: Details of Deebo Samuel’s 49ers contract tied to usage, playoffs
“Samuel will receive a $200,000 bonus if his combined rushing and receiving yards are 600 to 802 on the season. He will receive $450,000 if he achieves 803 scrimmage yards or more. He will earn double those amounts if the 49ers make the playoffs.
Samuel will make an additional $200,000 if he scores five or six touchdowns in the regular season. If he scores seven or more touchdowns, he’ll receive a $450,000 incentive. Again, those figures will be doubled if the 49ers make the playoffs.

Samuel will receive a $250,000 bonus for the season if he ranks 10th or better in average yards per kick return (minimum 20 returns). He’ll receive another $250,000 if he meets that incentive and the 49ers make the postseason.
Samuel also is scheduled to make $250,000 if he plays 68 percent or more of the 49ers’ offensive snaps.”
How 49ers’ offense, defense can benefit from Raheem Morris’ schematic changes
“The 49ers’ changes on defense include expanded usage of five defensive linemen and a simplified set of coverage assignments designed to enable the cornerbacks and safeties to play fast without being required to make too many split-second adjustments.”
Kawakami: ‘We know who we are’ — Brock Purdy on QB play and the 49ers’ 2026 vision (paywall)
“The most visible proof came toward the end of last season, after Purdy came back from his injury and looked in complete command of every part of the Shanahan offense. Purdy “canned” plays — Shanahan terminology for switching to an alternate call — swiftly and with confidence and just seemed to run things like he knew most of the answers before the questions were asked.”

49ers’ Eddy Piñeiro gets kick out of finally finding job security in NFL (paywall)
“That’s why I think it’s so hard for rookies when they come in,” said Piñeiro, who finally found some stability with the Panthers from 2022-24. “It’s just such a short leash they have with kickers. You miss kicks, you’re gone. It’s just part of the process, and I wish I would have known that faster in my career. I’m like, ‘Oh, I miss one, I’m gonna be OK.’ No, you’re not gonna be OK.”

49ers rookie De’Zhaun Stribling reveals what he’s learning from Mike Evans, veteran teammates
“We kind of weren’t even ready for the whole thing,” Stribling admitted during a conversation with Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. “Everyone was still parking cars and trying to get set up. And got the call from a San Jose area code.”
49ers rookie Jaden Dugger… the pass rusher?
“Dugger went from practicing with the off-ball linebackers to doing the same individual drills as Osa Odighizuwa in a matter of a week.
Dugger may need to beef up. He’s 240 pounds. That’s not somebody who is going to hold up on a down-to-down basis. However, he’s 6’5″ with a 7′ wingspan. Dugger’s 35″ arms should allow him to stay clean, but it’s going to take some time to learn the trades of a pass rusher.

The flashes are happening. During Monday’s practice, Dugger beat Trent Williams on a rep. That’s right, one of the best left tackles in the game. That’s where Dugger’s athleticism shows. A 10-foot-6 inch broad jump translates to a quick first step that would give any tackle, even Williams, problems.
But there were supposedly plenty of plays when Dugger looked lost, or didn’t have an answer to combat Isaac Alarcon, who is unlikely to make the roster. It’ll take time. Pass rushing is a craft that takes several years to master. It’s more than athleticism.
Thankfully, he has another fellow rookie to lean on. There’s a reason the 49ers were cautious with Romello Height. It doesn’t take long to realize he has the “it” factor. Height moves differently than everybody else not named Nick Bosa. It’s reminiscent of Dee Ford.
Height will be the designated pass rusher, much like Ford was. He has a deep bag of tricks. Dugger, if he’s going to continue to cross-train as a pass rusher, should follow Height closely.”
