West Ham United have seen an exit route disappear after Edson Álvarez rejected a return to Club América before Mexico’s transfer deadline. Fox Sports Mexico journalist Rubén Rodríguez reported the update, with Sport Witness carrying it on 3 September. The report says the 28-year-old Mexico international has no intention of going back to Mexico now because he wants to stay in Europe.
That is significant because the English window closed on Tuesday, while Mexico’s market stays open until 11 September, leaving a route for a deal. Álvarez returned to London after Fenerbahçe chose against making his loan permanent, despite his 2025/26 spell producing 34 appearances.

Ajax, Real Sociedad and Olympiacos showed interest, yet none secured his signature. He has now made one appearance this season, playing 75 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Portsmouth, while Nuno Espírito Santo left him out of all four Championship squads.

West Ham United are right to hold their line and keep Álvarez outside the matchday group for now. A 46-game Championship campaign demands players who fully accept the job, and Álvarez made clear this summer that he did not want second-tier football after returning from Fenerbahçe. Throwing an unhappy midfielder into Nuno’s plans could create dressing-room tension precisely when the manager needs everyone pulling in the same direction.

There is a financial argument against leaving a €15m asset idle, but selling cheaply simply to clear the issue would weaken West Ham United’s position. Ajax and Real Sociedad may have shown interest, while Olympiacos have been linked too, yet no club met the Hammers’ valuation before the window shut. Starting Álvarez ahead of players committed to the promotion push would send the wrong signal.
West Ham United can wait for a better opportunity
For now, West Ham can keep the player fit, avoid unnecessary Championship injury risk and protect his market value. His contract runs until June 2028, so the club have room to wait rather than accept a poor deal. With Club América now ruled out, the sensible course looks clear. Keep him training, preserve the €15m asset, and reassess in January when European clubs can make fresh moves.
For a side chasing promotion, that patience makes more sense than forcing a reluctant player into the team, particularly after investing heavily in a squad to handle the Championship’s physical demands and weekly pressure, while giving Nuno time to judge whether Álvarez can repair his position without disrupting the group.
