St. John’s has taken the Big East and all of college basketball by storm in coach Rick Pitino’s second season. The Red Storm clinched their first outright conference title since 1985 and enter the Big East Tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the league by multiple games.
Now comes the next challenge. Can the Red Storm clinch their first Big East Tournament title since 2000 while playing inside the familiar confines of Madison Square Garden? There are three other NCAA Tournament locks in the league that could have something to say about it, including two-time reigning national champion UConn.
The No. 3 seed Huskies dealt with some struggles during the regular season, but coach Dan Hurley’s club enters the postseason on a four-game winning streak and as the reigning conference tournament champions. No. 5 seed Marquette and No. 2 seed Creighton will also be looking to build momentum before learning their NCAA Tournament destinations on Sunday.
One team that appears to have a ton to play for is No. 4 seed Xavier. The Musketeers have beaten Creighton, Marquette and UConn but are still squarely on the bubble entering postseason play because of a sluggish 9-7 start to the season. Coach Sean Miller’s club has been playing much better basketball over the past two months but could use a run in the Big East Tournament to solidify its spot in the field of 68.
