Špaňhel played 10 games for Columbus in the franchise’s first two years and scored two goals. He never played another NHL game after leaving for Europe in 2002, where he played in Czechia, Denmark, and Norway.

He returned to North America in 2011 and played in the ECHL, but then retired soon after. Nowadays, he’s the Commissioner of the Columbus Adult Hockey League.
