The first round is “in the books”, as they say, and it did not disappoint us this year either – many lower-class teams sniffed at the surprise for a long time, even if only two managed to prevail against the favorite in the end: Regional league team Illertissen knocked out Nuremberg and Cottbus was the only third division team to advance – after a victory against Hannover 96.
The performance of last season’s finalist Arminia Bielefeld against Werder Bremen made us want more – and more cup action is coming in just under two months, when the remaining 32 teams will fight for a place in the cup round of 16 on October 28 and 29.
And now it’s finally clear who will be playing against whom. The second round of the cup has been drawn.
FV Illertissen – 1. FC Magdeburg
Energie Cottbus – RB Leipzig
Union Berlin – Arminia Bielefeld
1. FC Heidenheim – Hamburger SV
Borussia Mönchengladbach – Karlsruher SC
Hertha BSC – SV Elversberg
SpVgg Greuther Fürth – 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Eintracht Frankfurt – Borussia Dortmund
SV Darmstadt 98 – FC Schalke 04
FC Augsburg – VfL Bochum
Fortuna Düsseldorf – SC Freiburg
SC Paderborn 07 – Bayer 04 Leverkusen
1. FSV Mainz 05 – VfB Stuttgart
VfL Wolfsburg – Holstein Kiel
1. FC Köln – Bayern München
FC St. Pauli – TSG Hoffenheim
What do you think? Can Illertissen and Cottbus also survive the second round? Or are we expecting a round of 16 with only teams from the first and second Bundesliga?
