Athletic Club has officially announced the appointment of Javi Lerga as the new head coach of the women’s first team for the 2025-26 season. The 45-year-old coach from Navarre has signed for one season.
Lerga arrives at Lezama following a distinguished career with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, where he was the national Under-19 coach and won the European Championship with that category. Additionally, he has been part of the coaching staff of the senior women’s national team in top-level competitions, such as the 2023 World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics, working alongside Montse Tomé.
His experience in youth football and his methodological profile have been key for Athletic to bet on him in this new phase. Accompanying him to Bilbao is Rubén Berrogui, who will serve as the assistant coach after his time with the Osasuna Femenino coaching staff.
Lerga will take over a team that has completed two remarkable seasons under the direction of David Aznar, with a fifth and a fourth place in the Liga F, coming close to European qualification. His challenge will be to consolidate the team among the best in the category and take a further step in the pursuit of more ambitious goals.
