Preston, the lowest-ranked side remaining in the FA Cup, looked to cause an upset against top-tier Aston Villa at Deepdale, but the Villans had the first attempt as Marcus Rashford’s free-kick forced David Cornell into an early save.
Villa continued to probe for an opener and Ezri Konsa met Marco Asensio’s cross with a flicked header that skimmed the post.
Preston almost struck on the half hour mark when Mads Frökjaer-Jensen’s pass was met by Stefán Teitur Þórðarson, who headered just wide from close range.
The draw for the semi-finals will take place following the end of the Aston Villa’s trip to Preston
