Later, the Canadian goalkeeper redeemed himself for the earlier mistake after denying Almiron a potential game-equalizing penalty.
However, St. Clair’s heroic efforts could not be repeated as a second penalty was awarded to the visitors and Breel Embolo converted coolly on his debut.
Messi later missed not one but two opportunities to steal three points at the death.
The result means Miami dropped points for the 11th time this season and are 10 points off first in the Eastern Conference while Atlanta are second from the bottom.
