South American World Cup Qualifying continued Tuesday evening with a full slate of games before club football returns at the weekend.
Here is what went down.
Brazil 1-1 Uruguay
Scorers: Gerson 62’ ; Valverde 55’
Brazil dropped points for a second straight match after drawing with Uruguay at home.
Dorival Júnior’s side has seen their qualifying campaign marred by inconsistency, and that issue continued Tuesday evening.
While they saw most of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, they were punished after the break when Real Madrid man Federico Valverde scored a stunner to put the visitors ahead, but Brazil responded well.
Just seven minutes later, Gerson lashed home a superb volley to reclaim parity and earn a point for the hosts.
The shared points sees Brazil miss out on an opportunity to leapfrog Uruguay in the standings, but they will remain in fifth instead.
Argentina 1-0 Peru
Scorers: MartÃnez 55′
After defeat last time out, Argentina got back to winning ways with a narrow victory against Peru.
After a dull opening 45 minutes, Argentina upped the tempo in search of a go-ahead goal but Peru proved a tough nut to crack on more than one occasion.
Pedro Gallese and the Peruvian rearguard were stubborn throughout the night, and the frustration inside La Bombonera was palpable.
They were finally undone before the hour mark however, when Lautaro MartÃnez pulled off an audacious finish to fire home a Lionel Messi cross and give the hosts the lead.
The victory sees extend their lead at the top of the qualifying table to five points for now.
