The shirt had already come off and the celebrations were wild – but they celebrated too soon. Egypt’s goal for 2:0 (58th minute) against Argentina in the World Cup round of 16 was ruled out after a VAR intervention.

What happened? Marwan Attia had fouled Lisandro Martinez in Egypt’s half. The goal was disallowed because of that foul, since no opposing player touched the ball afterwards. Referee expert Lutz Wagner also confirmed on ‘ARD’ that the decision was correct: “Correctly overturned.” It was an attacking phase in which no Argentine player touched the ball again.
